Survey: Mileage achieved for RM50 petrol

Do it right the first time....

U might save up abit now.. but in d long run, if problems arised from it, you'll be troubled by it, and they'll be responsible for it....

There are lotsa cases whereby owners wanna do it their way..and the workshop jes doesnt care about the car / conversion / owner 's future well being.. then.. cases like.. car can't brake.. Over heat... aircond rosak... every 6 months driveshaft gets worn out... gearbox rosak due to improper fitting... and etc..

Imagine, u drive yer car out ok.. then sometime down the road.. someting happens.. go back again.. and again.. and again... that is, if u dont get it right the first time... I notice something through experience... there's no such thing as short cuts.. i tried it.. i.e. MSD.. went to another workshop to install some ignition booster.. cant even get d engine started.. no explanation give.. nothing.. jes shake head.. shake cock.. and bye bye....

1 whole day wasted.. everybody's timei is precious.. imagine, sending the car to the workshop at 10am.. getting the car back at 6pm.. with holes punched here and there... for mounting.. but in d end.. everyrhing went back to stock.. y? can't start... y cant start?? *silence*... then days later after much grumbling.. i hear something about ohms not d same..dis and dat... yeah..watever man..

Later.. went to GT.. got the explanation y it cant get started... apparently there was 1 thing 'not' complete... oh well.. watever.. took their method.. and viola... started..and got much more power and fuel economy out of it... everything was modded in accordance to what was 'calculated'.. no talk kok sing song... shake head . ...shake kok scenario....

Yep, abit pricey..at least the car 'was started up'...! and the performance was.. well, put it this way... with NOS engaged, all 4 Wheel were burning tyres with my RAV...

Imagine, u spend X amount of $$ on yer car in accordance to what u want.. Workshop X doesnt give a shit.. they know in d long run, there are bound to be problems.. so they take yer $$X.. and be jolly with it... then in future, u come back, they get $$Y for the problems...

Here, they know the problem, they dun want u to go through the hassle.. u pay slightly more, or perhaps abit more... but u'll not be going through the shits that u'll be facing with $$X... Have u ever wondered why they still have so many customers? coz these customers paid $$X & $$Y at other workshops before and went through shits...

Unless of coz, d person is d type of dude who likes to hang out at the Garage all d time, go back there, talk kok sing song shake head shake kok with them... hehehe...
ya...i agree with blackie. there's no shortcut to gain more power for ur car.
may be there is shortcut but problems will occur in long term.
i salute to those workshops that charge a bit more but won't hassle to explain every single problem that will occur if u do that way. besides they will also advise u not to go for shortcut and will ensure u there will no problem in long term if u pay a bit more.

anyway, to answer the post...
1. civic coupe
2. B16A
3. JUN cam, MSD, intake, header
4. ~ 350 km
5. still running on stock ECU so i think that might affect the consumption after those mods. saving money for programable ECU now. wish me luck :P

Mine's got pretty shitty consumption.

Car: Satria
Engine: 4G63 VR4
Mods: re-did everything..quite a list..
km 4 RM50: In town abt 260kms. Long distance: 345kms. (push here and there also)
other factors: Still running quite rich. komputer bok haven't fully tune.

thank you.

hey lekalo, your consumption is quite high leh,so i reckon tht u're churning out quite a lot of horses out of your VR4 rite?hehe :)
how much hp?care to share?ever did a dyno?

i believe not all workshops can do all cars , like people claim can do this & do that , but then when it comes to a certain car conversion , they fail to do it nicely . example like saga & iswara case to get the vr4 in a one hell of a headache if the mech never done it before . engine bay is smaller , turbo & alternator clearance with the radiator , over heating problem's , driveshaft problems , oil pan lower then cross member , well i notice a few cars with this prob , so its more base on experience rather then words right ?. some ones mechanic claim he play rotary and brought it to sepang drag , but then he fail to convert the mirage engine on the iswara  shame shame on his mechanic .

eee. shame-shame.

Itab>>
Noe, if consumption is shyte, doesn't mean serious power is made. Could be tuning issues where one is not running the ideal a/f ratio.

My engine? Donno la. But the output is a certain level, and the clutch is slipping like mad again. If launching hard there's stuff flying here and there off the dash and my fiancee says that I 'muka takut' when I do this. hmmm, go figure. :P hehehe..what's the point of having all the power in the world if the pilot also scared?
But was told I still can get more mileage. Waiting for the sifu/guru/master to finish his assignment :D

A recent article to share with you guys, from the S'pore Straits Times:

To Genting and back on one tank of petrol

A regular car. 50 litres of petrol. 840km of road, some of it uphill. Yet, Mr John Taylor does it with gas to spare
By Justin Lee

LAST weekend I participated in a record-breaking event that many sceptics said couldn't be done.
John Taylor (left), who went on a long driving stunt trip to Genting Highlands. This feat has earned him a place in the Malaysia Book of Records.

In a Subaru Impreza 1.6 TS, with a standard 50-litre fuel tank, Mr John Taylor drove from Singapore to Genting Highlands and back without refuelling.

The total distance covered was 838.5km and, when he returned to Singapore, there were still 7.75 litres of petrol left in the tank.

Mr Taylor, a fit 50-year-old Australian from Melbourne, claims that this is the longest distance ever covered by a car here on a single tank.

Quite obviously, he is no ordinary driver. In fact, he is mentioned in the Guinness Book Of Records for driving over 2,300km in a diesel Peugeot 406 HDi with a standard 70-litre fuel tank.

The vehicle he used for this local record-breaking feat was a Subaru Impreza TS, part of the local Subaru dealer's rental fleet.

Apart from the tyres, which are Yokohama's latest C-Drive tyres that have low-rolling resistance to provide better fuel economy, the car is standard stock.

The petrol tank was topped up with Shell Formula 98 at the Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim station and sealed in front of three witnesses.

Both the tyres and petrol used are standard items that can be purchased by anybody.

No weight saving tactics, such as removing the spare tyre or overinflating the tyres, were used. In fact, there was even a duffle bag of clothes for the weekend in the boot.

The drive was part of Shin Min's annual Fun Drive and, while most of the participants had a scheduled lunch stop at Malacca before heading towards Genting Highlands, I was to navigate Mr Taylor directly to the final destination with a single toilet stop en route.

We set off from Raffles Marina at 7.30am. Our route would take us on the Second Link and up the North-South Highway on to Kuala Lumpur before heading east towards Kuantan and turning off for Genting after passing Batu Caves.

The first thing one notices about the way Mr Taylor drives is how gentle he is with the car.

'After a few hours with the car, I can feel that it is most comfortable at just under 2,000rpm and I try to keep the engine steady at this figure. The secret is to keep the revs as constant as possible,' he explains.

At 2,000rpm, the Impreza is cruising at a leisurely 70kmh, which means practically everyone is zooming past us. But this doesn't worry him. Instead, with the windows down and his hand resting on the sill, he is enjoying the gentle breeze that is blowing in.

'I always drive with the window down and often with bare feet, as it allows me to feel the accelerator better,' he shares.

What about the parachute effect that open windows have, trapping the air within the passenger compartment rather than flowing around and above the car if the windows are closed?

'Yes, at speeds above 80kmh, an open window does have this effect, but we aren't travelling fast enough for this to happen,' he explains.

The other reason he has the windows open is to gauge the wind direction.

'Do you feel the crosswind?' he asks. 'The worst thing you can have is a headwind blowing against you, but if there's a slight tailwind, or a crosswind from the rear, then you're in luck.'

Another fuel saving tactic he uses is to allow the car to gather momentum on a downward slope and let this natural inertia push the car part of the way up the following incline, all the time trying to keep the revs constant.

After about 100km, he points to the fuel gauge to show that the needle has still not moved from F.

By the time we reach Seremban, the storm clouds that had been gathering since we started finally drop their load.

'Rain is not a good sign - firstly, there is often a headwind to deal with, and also a loss of traction. See the spray from the wheels, that's energy being wasted,' says Mr Taylor.

True enough, despite the rpm being constant, our speed slows down to around 65kmh, down from the 70kmh we held when the conditions were dry.

In drives like this, if the rain gets bad, he prefers to stop the car and wait for it to pass. In this case, the rain passed before we reached the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, so we continue driving.

Getting through KL proper at around noon proves to be quite a challenge as even the expressways are jammed. Although we are crawling for about a half hour, Mr Taylor does not switch off the engine. He explains that, while it would save fuel, it would also void any record-breaking attempt with Guinness officials.

Even greater challenges continue after leaving KL as the route starts its climb to Genting Highlands.

This is when he starts talking to the car, coaxing it along. The steep inclines mean shifting into the lower gear ratios but he only uses first and second gears for just a few seconds to give the car a push before changing up to third and fourth.

'This may look easy to you, but I'm actually working really hard with the gears and just feathering the accelerator to keep the revs below 2,000rpm,' he says. 'It is times like these when it's so easy to just give in, but it would blow everything we've worked for all along the way.'

Half jokingly, he suggests leaning forward to help matters.

Despite the nerve-wracking last few kilometres, the petrol gauge showed that we have made it all the way up to Genting - a distance of 420km - with 2/3 of a tank untouched.

This proves to be more than enough for the return journey, which takes place two days later.

In many ways, an economy drive is more akin to sailing than driving.

One has to take note of the road situation, whether it is uphill or downhill, and the prevailing wind conditions, learning to 'read the wind' by looking at the trees.

And you shouldn't be bothered by being overtaken by practically everything on the road, sometimes even 125cc motorcycles.

And this is a forummer's reply to this thread in the forum:

"OK John and Helen Taylor's technique is this. Do not let the RPM go above 2k for too long. With manual, change up just before 2k RPM. Which means 1st and 2nd gear is usually done with half-clutch and then up. Most cars when cruising at 5th gear will hit 75-80kph at 2k RPM. You can go a little faster but 88kph is the critical speed when air resistance becomes a factor. When being slowed down and the RPM hits below 1.5k, change down. Again as the Taylors said, anticipate every possibile encounter. With this technique and keeping to speed limits I have found out that most traffic lights are synchronized. As you set off from the first green, the next set of lights showing red will be green soon if you just put your foot off the pedal and brake intermittently. As it changes, drop to the gear for the speed you are at and start off.

Yes, the secret is now revealed. The traffic light system here punishes jack rabbitters with heavy FC.

Now Taylors didn't turn on the A/C. I do but the technique still works. This explains why I and Arah post extraordinary gains from a "fuel guzzling Korean made" car. The Taylors actually learned the technique from the Germans. They are the ones who teach "L" drivers these techniques on top of the usual safety. You know the Germans, they recycle everything and are very "green" people. The Taylors made it into record breaking feats.

This by no means you compromise safety. When power is needed for you to get out of a situation, use the heavy right foot. "

lekalo,
icic....so gonna get your air/fuel ration rite with an SAFC or maybe even a standalone management system?hehhe....
speaking of SAFC,i have a question la,how much increase of hp can it help to gain with proper tuning?is it possible for a GSR to gain say 250hp by just tuning wif SAFC?without major mods

itab ... i dun think its possible to gain 250hp by just tuning the safc. can ahh?? if think logically la standard GSR 210hp gain up to 250hp. its a 40hp increase. that one quite a lot. can ahh?? i also dunno lah must ask the sifus 1st.

lelako ... after got services and a major tuning my car. i got a superb condition of fuel :) now for rm40 i can go for about 280km for a highway and i think for a town can get 260km. better la than last time for rm50 i only manage to get 200-230km.
i think my fuel too rich la last time.

techtic,

yeah,40hp is really quite a lot to ask, hehe, anyway i was just curious whether this could be achieved by tuning with SAFC alone la,just wanna know how much of difference it would make without changing other stuffs like bigger turbo.
anymore opinions?sifus-sifus sekalian?

40hp from just tuning SAFC? Wauuu!!! Amazing! But I don't htink it can be done, as my previous understanding of the SAFC is that it needs the Ignition Timing Controller (ITC) to fully refine its tuning capabilities.

And standard GSR is not 210 hp. That's the so-called "RS" version.
Std GSR is 190hp... I think. Yes. that should be the figure.

Techtic>> Well done buddy. Keep trying n u shud get more.
