The three hallowed letters ‘GTO’ only adorns the best of best Ferraris. The GTO denotes ‘Gran Turismo Omologata’ where road-going Ferraris were homologated for track use. This explains why only three cars in the Ferrari stable have ever worn that badge – the 250 GTO, 288 GTO, and the most recent 599 GTO. Of this trio, the most collectible has to be the 250GTO, with it consistently breaking world record auction prices.
Produced between the years of 1962 – 1964, it is said that only 39 GTOs were ever made. Unsurprisingly, even fewer remain on roads today, which explains in part why the 250GTO commands such a high price. My knowledge of vintage Ferraris is admittedly poor, but from what I have read, the 250GTO is based upon the 250 SWB Berlinetta. While the short wheelbase remain unchanged, Ferrari changed much of the tubular steel frame braces and suspension mounting joints to increase stiffness to provide enhanced balance on track. Power came in the form of a 3-litre V12 as used in the racing 250TR, with some modifications allowing the high-revving V12 to produce 300hp at 7,500rpm. While 100hp per litre might not sound like very much, you have to remember that these figures were exceptional during that period. Mated to a 5-speed gearbox, the V12 proved to be a powerful powerplant – linear and tractable in its power delivery.

Imagine my surprise when I saw this silver 250GTO during the recent Zerotohundred Shell Helix 2011 Invasion Tour to Penang! I’ve never seen a 250GTO in the flesh before but to me, there seemed to be some oddities to the proportions of the car... As it turned out, the GTO you see in this article is actually a replica. Structurally and mechanically, it is based on a 1974 260Z Fairlady, endowed with a 2.5-litre inline 6-cylinder paired to a 5-speed manual box.
I had a quick conversation with Frank, the owner of this 250 GTO replica and it turns out that he’s actually looking to sell the car as he will be moving away from Malaysia. While I cannot vouch for the mechanical well-being of this car, in the flesh, this car does look to be in good condition. The quality of the conversion seems to be of solid, maintaining the curves of the car inspiration was taken from. Perhaps one important point is that the A/C is in good working condition! Very few 250 GTOs still exist in today’s world, and with the last few shifting hands for over 30 Million Sterling Pounds, this would be the next best choice.

The car and owner are located in Penang, and as I was not given an asking price, interested parties should give Frank a call at: 016-444 7280.
