Volvo Car Malaysia has officially introduced the ES90, its first fully electric flagship sedan. Locally assembled in Shah Alam, the ES90 features a high-riding "three-box" silhouette that combines sedan proportions with the ground clearance and seating position typically associated with crossovers.

Exterior Design and Practicality

The ES90 marks a shift in Volvo’s design language for sedans, emphasizing aerodynamic efficiency with a drag coefficient of 0.25.

  • Signature Lighting: The front features the "Thor’s Hammer" LED pixel matrix headlights. At the rear, the C-shaped LED lamps are joined by vertical LED light strips embedded directly into the rear windscreen, a detail shared with the EX30 and EX90.
  • Hatchback Versatility: Unlike a traditional sedan with a trunk lid, the ES90 uses a wide-opening fastback-style power tailgate. This provides access to 424 liters of storage, which expands to 904 liters when the 40/20/40 rear seats are folded.
  • Stance: The car sits on a 3.1-meter wheelbase and comes standard with 22-inch five-spoke diamond-cut alloy wheels. It features a ride height of 203 mm (178 mm ground clearance).

Architecture and Performance

The ES90 is the first Volvo model to utilize 800-volt architecture, significantly improving thermal management and charging speeds.

  • Battery & Range: The Malaysian-spec model features an 88 kWh battery (usable) providing a WLTP range of up to 651 km.
  • Charging: It supports DC fast charging at rates up to 350 kW. Under optimal conditions, a 10% to 80% charge takes approximately 22 minutes, while a 10-minute top-up can add up to 300 km of range.
  • Drivetrain: The single-motor rear-wheel-drive setup produces 245 kW (333 hp) and 480 Nm of torque, enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint in 6.6 seconds.

Interior and Technology

The cabin is designed around a "Scandinavian living room" concept, focusing on minimalist physical controls and high-quality materials.

  • Infotainment: The dashboard is dominated by a 14.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen running a Google-built-in OS. Unlike the EX90 SUV, which uses a round controller, the ES90 features a physical rotary dial on the center console for multimedia functions.
  • Computing: It is the first Volvo powered by a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration, providing the core computing power for its "Safe Space" technology. Notably, the Malaysian-spec model does not include a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor.
  • Cabin Comfort: Features include an electrochromic panoramic glass roof (tunable transparency), a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system with a dedicated "Abbey Road Studios" mode, and ventilated Nordico upholstery.
Pricing and Availability

The Volvo ES90 is priced at RM339,888 in Malaysia. It is available in four colors: Vapour Grey, Crystal White, Denim Blue, and Onyx Black. The first 100 customers to book by March 31, 2026, will receive a 2% early-bird incentive.
