Heard that spot welding can help make the body stronger. My old AE80 needs it I think?

I also need, still looking :( - can't find and no time to find :( - when found no spare car :(

Also known as "seam welding". Most people seam weld around the suspension towers and around the suspension pickup points, those are the places that usually flex a fair bit. If you're very keen you can also weld around the windscreen and door frames, those are also known to flex a little.

But yes, if you're going to seam weld at all, definately do all the suspension pickup points and suspension towers.

I didn't seam weld my car, I wish I did now - so many squeeks and rattles. The cage helps a lot to strenghten the car, and for a little while after I put it in there were no squeeks and rattles, but now there are a lot again :(

If got time we can strip down ourselves and hire a welder to our house renting a MIG with nitrogen gas for ver little money and just pay him labour.

Strip down takes nearly 1 week while hiring the welder probably takes 2 weeks with chassis repairs.

That's 3 weeks down time excluding paint.

After that send to paint shop.

I only know cannot use FIRE type, must be electric type. Else the fire will burn the metal and oxygen will leak in and that part becomes a cancer and spread with internal rust.

If only I have a spare car :(

I've heard...that, there's a shop called 'Master Body'...
but I don't know where's the shop is...
few said that they used laser to scan the body position...

Theoretically, spot welding should be the correct term to use if you want chasis strengthening but you can also use seam weld to describe it in layman terms. this is because the actualy seam welding, is another process of welding usually found in automation welding such as shock absorber. usually race prep/rally cars are spot welded all along the car body where there's joining of 2 different metal piece.

if you're a DIY person and have some cash, time and have a space car to drive, yes you can actually spot weld along the joint. and yes, you must use a MIG welding set coupled with CO2 as shielding gas. you CANNOT use gas welding or commonly known as fire welding whereby you burn LPG and heat up the metal piece u wanna weld and fill in with a brazing rod. gas welding will take you years to complete a car body but MIG welding will take you 3-4 days at best, 2 week at most.

i work in the welding line and one my customer who buys machine from me does chasis strengthening and i've seen him done that. very neat and just by one glance, you'll see your car looks like a polka dotted styled car. but obviously thats before he spray paint it. apparently it was for merdeka endurance race last year. anyway, JFA motorsport is the place if you ask me. i think most car tuning shop should be able do spot welding for you, but make sure the shop is reputable, or else if the welding is bad and rust occurs, you rather not wanna take corners at 80kmh!!

i know where, been there before.segambut area but cant remember the address.
actually the guy specialised in MINI restoration.i already see his work,,DAMN GOOD man.!!

Prodigy,
Is it the kind that they use in the exhaust shop? Will the thing rust after being coated with anti-rust?

One thing, if I do spot welding, I'll just go for the chasis, unseen parts only. Firstly, I've just painted my can :( Don't want to spend more money....you know and also sayang le.

Have to spot weld already cos can see some cracks caused by age and bending cause by high speed corners.... :P

Wonder if JFA charges a lot? Is JFA the shop in Sunway?

how much would a set of welding equipment cost, for the seamwelding job? :D

would like to know la...no need those branded types, juz a realiable one which is suitable for those spot-welding jobbies...

a 2nd hand MiG welding set could cost RM2000 and below. my mechanic bought a unit for RM1500, but not well known brand la.. new one if im not mistaken in the region of RM4k and up. the one my mechanic bought is the same one used in a bodyshop i've sent my car to b4.

don't buy, rent - one month RM100+ only but have to pay to nitrogen gas and leads

prodigy - JFA - got phone number or not?

I have a question...
After welded the top surface, stock anti rust at the bottom surface might get damaged due to the heat. And since we can't reach that surface and cover it with paint, over a period of time when it expose to our country high humid weather, that area will tends to attack by rust.
Which mean we are shorthen our car's chassis lifespan if we spot welded it. Am i right?

autoblackie,
yeap, a MIG machine is the ones you see in exhaust shop. it doesn't matter whether u apply anti-rust or not, a badly welded material would have contain oxidation(rust) the moment the welded area cools off. even with 5 layers of antirust, its a matter of time before the rust appears. very important is the usage of suitable filler material and welding technique.

e39a,
a decent made in malaysia welding set for seam welding would probably cost you around RM 3000. a second hand welding machine will be anything below RM2000 depending on condition. but i tell you, if you're looking for a cheapo china/taiwan made ones, the welding quality will also be cheapo. i sell welding machine, yes the market is flooded with china/taiwan ones but the people who buy and used such machines are normally not particular about weld quality. if you go to ah kau exhaust shop to weld your pipe, you think he's gonna care if his machines welds badly that results in porosity and rust. i sell some machines to JFA and he's those who care about weld quality and makes sure his customer don't come back complaining exhaust bocor. i'm not promoting JFA but i do think he's a person who looks into long term business with customers and cares about quality. i've got some customers who absolutely cares nothing about quality and goes for the cheapest. depends on individual actually.

hi guys,

actually i did a lots of this spot welding to my race cars and its seems like you guys havent notice something more important. If you ask me to weld the car ( lets say a levin ) i need 3-5 days to done it ( fully weld the car ) but b4 u do the welding u need to clear all the anti rust and silicon which is blocking the body join. the cleaning will take a week if you dont have proper tools or even u have it you still need 3-4 days ( full days ) to done it .

this is my experince. good luck guys

wakautech-san,
i felt very ichi hand when seeing your secret track car.
Can i volunteer myself to spot weld it? :D

FYI, i have good welding result during high school training session....em..
