Following the first round of the Malaysian Super Series (MSS), Team Proton R3 are sitting in the top spot and with the second round approaching this weekend at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC), the team will be going all out to preserve that lead.
The team’s driver, Faidzil Alang, an overall winner at the Merdeka Millennium Endurance (MME) race in 2006, piloted their Proton R3 Satria Neo to second spot in the first race after qualifying in pole but was bogged down by an electrical problem. In the second heat, Faidzil drove a dominant race from start to finish, taking the win.
This weekend, the team will debut a second car to their lineup, a Proton R3 Gen.2, that will see young driver Syafiq Ali return to behind the wheel of a Proton. His previous achievements include winning the 2008 Asian Touring Car Series Championship in the 500Max class and Class B in the 2008 MME as well. It’s interesting to note that both those achievements were made in a Satria Neo.
“In the short time Syafiq has been a racing driver, he has built up a reputation for being quick, disciplined and a team player. We are happy to have him aboard again as a driver for Team Proton R3. Together with Faidzil Alang, we can’t ask for a better team this weekend,” said Tengku Djan Ley, Head of Engineering, Proton Motorsports Division.
“The old adage, win on Sunday, sell on Monday still holds true today for Proton R3. Much of the lessons learnt on the race and rally tracks have found their way into our showroom limited edition R3 vehicles. Any Proton owner can also equip their vehicles with our accessories and parts that have been inspired and honed through rigorous testing and competition,” said Datuk Abdul Razak Dawood, Head of Proton Motorsports Division.
The remaining three rounds of the five-round series will be held on the following dates, 2-3 July for Round three, 1-2 October for Round 4 and 26-27 November for the fifth and final round. In the meantime, let us keep our fingers crossed for the Proton R3 team to do well in the second round this weekend.
