A very good day to everyone.

I am planning to buy my first car by end of August latest. Before, I ride bike to work but since now I got a new job which is far from my home I would like to get a car so I dont get to work wet during raining days. Below are the details and requirements.

-Budget less than 45k.
-First-hand car since I do not know anything about cars.
-I am from Penang. I live in Paya Terubong and need to travel to Kulim daily to work. So the car will need to travel through a hill (pretty steep) and highway daily.
-Low fuel consumption.
-Low maintenance.
-Has to be auto.
-Cars I had in mind are Kenari, Kelisa, Savvy, Myvi.
-Cars that I am not interested in are Iswara 1.5 (no auto and 3 gears), Wira (again its 3 gears), Sutera.
-Any other recommendation is highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for the response.

Regards.

First, congrat on your new job! Second, I'm glad you have opted for a safer and more 'protected" mode of transportion from the weather and from "unique" Malaysian drivers' attitude.....

From the cars u have listed (Kenari, Kelisa, Savvy, Myvi), I would recommend Myvi. The car is pretty good interms of power, offers good fuel consumption, practical and looks nice too. My dad bought one and he has no complaint abt it.

I recommend u to check out the ZTH's subforums abt this car....the feedbacks are quite good.

Happy driving!

Hi ken yeang,

First of all I would like to say tks to you. I do have Myvi in mind but is MyVi1.0L good in terms of pickup and FC? Myvi 1.3EZ is RM46K++. I would love to keep the price as low as possible. Since this is going to be my first car and I have to admit I am not a good driver at all. Meaning I will have lots and lots and lots of dents and scratches. After improving my driving and parking, I would get something better. I am planning to keep my first ride at least 5 years so I dont think resale value is important.

About Myvi, my friend is driving one. FC is not that good comparing his car (Myvi 1.3EZ) and his wife's car (Kelisa EZ). Waiting period is 2-3months, so I can only get my car in October earliest. Myvi ECU having problem? Perodua SC changes my friend's ECU during 2nd service but sad enough my friend didn't ask why.

About Savvy, so far I got a friend who owns one. Service is not expensive (less than RM300 for second service). FC is good. Problem is, engine is Renault. I hope Savvy wont have the same fate as Tiara and Waja1.8.

About Kenari (opted for Kenari to Kelisa coz of bigger space) I read from this forum, looks like there are a few problems. FC some report high while some report very good FC. Engine is loud (3 cylinders so I cant do anything about it). Wind sound (sound proofing can solve this problem?).

Choices choices... headache headache... problems problems.
Thanks.

Regards.

Tks for everyones replies and PMs. I have made up my mind and already paid for my new Kenari. I am glad all of you here are supportive. Thanks again.

Regards.

You went for a Kenari instead of Myvi? What's wrong with people here? Yeah, both are around the same budget, Kenari had huge space as well, both are roughly the same thing but they're from different era, chassis design 10 years back compared to what we have now is different ! Ram into a Myvi head on, both at 50km/h and see for yourself the damage your car will get. And not to say the drastic build quality difference both cars had, the choice of materials from suppliers and so on. Daihatsu MOVE, the one Kenari was based on, had ceased production for many years, hence expect parts for that to continue to decrease, and no manufacturer would put extra effort into designing new, improve mods for Kenari. However Myvi was launched simultaneously with Daihatsu Boon/Sirion, therefore you are actually getting a Jap car for that price, not a old, ceased production Jap design, and this ultimately means newer, improve mods will gradually come for another 3-4 years.

New car, maintenance free; modern car, saves lives, more fun. You made a WRONG decision.

I will narrow my choices to two cars.

Myvi vs. Kelisa.
Both have price below RM45k. Since highway travelling and hill-steep driving is required, Kelisa is a better choice because of handling. Besides, it has lower fuel consumption due to lower engine capacity.

I would not opted for Kenari, because body height and thus, handling of Kenari and Myvi almost the same. Kelisa will still rule out these two cars because it has only 1000cc instead of 1300 for the Kenari and Myvi.

However, if you do not like Kelisa because it is an old model, you should have opted for Myvi, the 2nd choice.

hmm.. go for de MyVi bro.. de car has a good engine built by toyota, good handling for a normal road use car n looks kinda good too.. cheers!

if u haf extra cash can modify it too.. make it to be VIP style modified.. looks good bro.. cheers again..

Why would you say Kenari is a bad choice. I'd beg to differ on that. While Myvi maybe the latest that can be offered but Kenari is a seasoned car and i'm sure when saying its seasoned, the petty problems would have been ironed out. Myvi might have its initial problem and its only after the first few batches that problems are ironed out.

Parts is not a big issue here. When you have over 100,000 plus cars on the road, you will never run out of second hand parts. If you're worried about Daihatsu running out of parts at one point, then i guess Wira drivers should be even more worried as Mitsubishi has stopped selling the Lancer(Wira equivalent) ages ago. The local industry should be able to support most parts replacement for the Kenari IMO. Besides, you just got to look at the K-car scene in Malaysia and i doubt they'll run out of parts anytime soon. Not for the next 15 years i think. But i can understand your point if we're talking about a Saab or Skoda model which is about 10 year old and the manufacturer have ceased production of it. That is a real worry. Certainly not for national cars or Japanese cars.

Guess many look at cars as if they're examining a piece of shirt. Look at the tag, tests whether they're comfortable, look in the mirror, and off you go. Guys, the underneath part, is where the fundamental value is, not the body panels, Daichi can always reminds you that. Myvi is using a modern, Toyota engine, chassis design and GOA body were all Toyota standards, and mind me, except rubbish like Avanza and Unser (which is unknown to people in the northern hemisphere); there has been a while which i hadn't met a toyota with lower 4 star crash tests rating, this speaks of the confidence and technology modern cars can give you.

Ironing off problems? Oh well, perhaps the bulbs and the floor mats, there's not much you can "iron" for something as simple a car as that. And i certainly do not welcome vague comments like "possible problems" and "sesoned product". Both were boxes with four wheels, i don't think there's a nuclear failure urgency in neither of them.

Short to say, don't put a Kenari next to a Myvi. Although both are still in showrooms, doesn't mean you're paying new money for new rides.

With RM45k u can get very good 2nd hand car in very good condition of if u choose carefully. My suggestion will be something like Toyota Camry 2.2, its powerful n good handling, petrol consumption wise is not much, my family happen to bought one 2 years back and the initial touch up cost for the car only RM3k,til now the car have no hiccup at all, and its very strong bumper n body, in 2 accidents when a new proton waja and wira bang on the Camry side mudgard, the proton waja n wira car hood area all gone but the Camry suffer oni a signal light crack and scratch a lil bit oni. On top of that, the Toyota Camry that my family driving is about 10 years old.

My point is since u are looking for decent car for the next five years, might as well get a good and reliable car which have proven track record and quality wise is proven. I will choose Camry instead of local new car.

One more point to consider is that now if u are bachelor u might not be thinking about boot space and legroom of car,but once u get married with kids and luggage, space is very important to u like lugage for u, ur wife,ur children, the diapers bag, travel bag, shopping bag, baby stroller etc. So u see, u only need to get the car once, the rest is maintanance. But if u bought a local moderate size or small size car, after a while u wil be thinking about changing car, mainly due to the cheap quality material use for all the parts, my kenari i use oni 2 years the dashboard and engine start to make all kinda rattling sound, and the gear box started to leak oil all sorta rubbish.

Btw now is the time to hunt for a 2nd hand value car as they are having over supply of car in the market sorta a glut, the value is dam bloody cheap. I think u should consider with so many type of car to choose from local to continental car.

Good luck!

Just my 2 cents.
