Need advise on year 82 BMW 525i

Hi sifus,
I have a 82 yr Bimmer 525i and would like to transplant the engine.
There are some engines in my mind which is 1) SR20DET 2) RB20DET 3) RB26DET 4) 1JZE

Would like to get advise what engine is suitable for a big and heavy car like 525i?
And would like to know if JPJ approved the transplant?
Last Any idea how much it cost for the transplant for each engine that mention above.

P/S:- currently im running on auto and would like to chg to Manual.

In Malaysia, 1982 can either be the E12 or the E28 5 series. If E12, it is probably a 525 without the "i" but then you want to take out the engine anyway.

If it is an E28, best engine for this car is the BMW 3.5 inline 6 and many won't comment on jap engines conversion ;)

The older 525i is not that big, just slightly bigger than the E36 3 series.

actually the 525i's M20B25 engine is quite adequate for a midsize saloon like the E28.

i would suggest u leave da car as stock unless ur engine really got problem...

we as BMW lovers wont recommend u to transplant Jap engine, but if u wan we cant stop u :p bear in mind that the Jap engine ur putting is turbo engine, so u might wanna watch ur petrol bills...

u can always get a five speed manual for da 525i...

dude... there has been some controversies regarding bout whether the 2.5litre engine is a M20 or M30...

but i stand to be corrected... the only 2.5 litre M30 is only used in E12. E28 onwards alredi using M20 B25

it seems that u've done ur homework alrite... but as u know, european market n US cars have different specs altogether esp engine model n their power output.

the only way to win this debate is to ask our fren jonathan here to post a pic of the engine bay ;) then we'll b able to settle it once n for all...

by da way, i have seen the original M20 B25 in my fren's stock E28 525i. therefore i stand wif this fact ;) probably later models of E28 r equipped wif M20s kuah

BMW 6-potters... love it! Smooth and lots of torque. Can tapau any heavily modded Wiralution flat.

im'not saying there's no m20b25 in an E28....i know one in TTDI, but that is a transplant.....if you still insist there's an original in 525i, what to do...that's your opinion, but i highly doubt it based on the facts that i have

oh btw, my neighbor has one sold 2 months ago 525i shadowline....IT'S THE M30!!!!!!!!!!

another thing is can i chg the auto gearbox to manual? coz i felt like the car jerk whn shifting gears and not smooth at all.What kinda of model gearbox i can used on the engine and can i turbo charged the engine by bolt on?

did u just buy this car? from ampang?

check the 3rd link of my earlier post. there's a list of manual gbox you can choose...

finding them in chop shops will not be that tough

turbo charged? aiya dont la.....your engine is very old, why u want to put more stress to it

if u want extra ummph, go for the 3.5 engine, half cut will cost u ~6k maybe???

if u serious on getting Jap turbo engine, then i suggest u must get back da ori gearbox that is meant to b mated wif that engine... unless u got lots of $$$ to burn n wanna fabricate ur own long shaft etc...

im from penang i got this car long time ago and it's a weekend car... :D seldom drive as well coz i have perdanan V6 Mivec and Kancil Turbo. :D
But with my old engine can i get ummph from it? coz planin to play drift with that car so need more power to drift the car....

okie...i will post the pic of my engine bay tonite...coz rite now i don't have any idea on what engine and spec my car has now.
it's better that i post the pic and you guys can guide me how to mod the car and gain housepower....

if u wanna use da car for drifting... i've seen an E28 drift car using SR20 DET engine if im not mistaken... was posted at ZTH some time ago...

u hav much respect for da 528i huh? but any car also can tapau my car cos mine is a 3 speed auto :p no top end

the supercharger is from Toyota estima, according to turbo sang, will give about 30% increase in power... which roughly equates to a M20B25.... so dunno la....

i'm in no position on what mods are good if you are into drifting, not my rice bowl la, sorry!

alamak 3 speed, that calls for a gbox swap.

my buddy is driving a pristine condition (inside out) E28 528i w/ dogleg......this beast can run i tell ya
