My dad is driving a 96 CRV. The first impression when you get inside the car is that you'll notice how spacious the back seats are. I've got quite long legs and i've sat inside many cars and i must say the CRV has probably one of the most comfortable seating position in the sense you can stretch your legs and the front guys still have enuff space. The interior is pretty good and if you get yourself a good second hand unit, doubt you'll need any touching up and the seats are very firm. Not exactly very supportive coz i was driving back from Ipoh non stop for about 2 hours and had a little bit stiff back but don't worry maybe i'm just too big.
On drivability, its not exactly a very big car so its rather easy to drive about. I've driven the Ford Ranger and let me tell you, this monster is not easy to park. So a CRV is in between a saloon car and a 4x4. Its pretty comfortable car to begin with. But you cannot compare the comfort level of a cefiro/camry/accord with a CRV coz 4x4 vehicles no matter what still have a degree of bumpiness. But if you're a highway driver, you'll be rewarded with a smooth comfortable ride. You almost don't feel that you're doing 130kmh at the highway.
As for performance, i'd say the CRV is pretty powerful for its weight and you'll be impressed with the mid range torque most. As usual, Honda engines are very rev friendly and it'll rev till redline without any extra effort and there's no torque lost felt even at redline unlike other cars. The mid range torque comes in handy when you're climbing a hill or trying to overtake cars. But as much as this engine loves to revs, you're notice the car will stop pulling away fast when it reaches somewhere near 140kmh. Maybe its just my car but i've tried full throttling at 140kmh but it'll slowly go to 150kmh and next thing you know, a Wira has already overtaken you. Guess its the weight penalty but i've smoked countless Wira's and Iswara's from standstill but you tend to lose out at high speed.
As for maintenance, i'd say this is quite an expensive car to maintain. Don't get me wrong here but there's a price to pay for a 'mid luxury car'. I mean if you buy a Benz or Beamer, definitely you'll be paying more for the maintenance too. If you're buying a 96 or 97 model CRV, you should be expecting a certain degree of wear and tear and be prepared to fork out few thousand bucks in absorbers, bushes, belts and etc.
As for looks, i think it depends on how you wanna mod it. But personally i think you shouldn't lower it like some people do. It just takes the looks away from a lifestyle 4x4. I'd suggest getting a nice 19" bling bling wheels. Fit in a nice skirting and spoiler. Install a nice sound system and you're ready to roll!

My car dun have any problem to speed till the maximum of 180kmh everytime in the highway... Somemore my car is fully mod with bodykit and 17'' rims... Maybe my engine is different with ur engine...is urs twin cam engine with 140bhp??
