Hi all, I have a Toyota Corolla with Blacktop 20V and recently, the clutch has been slipping. This happens even in low gears. The funny thing is, sometimes I can complete the whole journey without the clutch slipping once. It's an on and off problem.

I understand that the clutch is hydraulically-controlled and rollakid told me that it is self-adjusting. So, it my clutch so worn out that it has to slip (although it has been adjusted) or are there any other parts involved?

Any feedback is appreciated. I don't want to fork out for a new clutch unless I'm sure there's no way to fix the problem. Thanks

any pedal freeplay after u have fully release your clutch pedal ?? as in some looseness in the pedal b4 u actually feel the force of the clutch as u depress the pedal .. if u cannot then maybe the clutch is being depressed all the time a some degree ..
other symptoms maybe clutch plate or cover worn out liauuu ..
the best symptom .. ENGINE TOO POWER !! hehehehehe

Yes there is free play after I release the pedal. I think I should check the clutch to see if it's worn out. But the problem is, sometimes it bites and sometimes it doesn't.

If I'm going to change my clutch, any recommendations for a good clutch? I'm thinking of changing to semi-racing clutch but with enough city-drivability.

Hehehe....or maybe I should detune my engne a bit....

stock clutch and cover oso more than good enuff for your everyday and occasional whack the sheet out of the car driving liauuu lorr ...
if u ALWAYS play with clutch for launching or uphill slopes then maybe the stock clutch may overheat abit and slip laa .. otherwise the stock clutch should be adequate .. make sure ORI only laa .. hehehehe :p

walao... want to use until semi-racing clutch??
Sure your car very powerful liao lor.. why not going for Twin Plate Clutch Set?

btw, if normal town using, the stock cluth are adequate already.
But seem u said still slip...mean ur car too powerful until the clutch can't bite the flywheel lor... are you car is Turbo?

If your car is not powerful... i think you better check the clutch plate already, i scare it overheat and burned already le....

there is big possibility ur clutch system is worn out already ...
but my guess is cover.but since u opening the g.box..for sure change already laa....

for black top with moderate mod, i suggest u go for a semi race organic clutch plate and a heavy duty clutch cover. sure no slip but may be a little harder pedal pressure compare to standard..

Any recommendations on brands? How much would one of those cost?

No my car is non-turbo.

Sometimes the clutch bite like hell but sometimes slip. Could be the clutch is almost worn already.

Well, since like ur clutch is worn out but that might be few things that cause the clutch slipping.

1. When u driving, ur left foot like to hang on the clutch pedal that could make the clutch plate hurt by the bearing.

2. Or ur gearbox seal got oil leaking and when ur car toooo power and the oil just spin around on the clutch plate and making it sometime grib and sometime not grib at all.

3. Maybe ur clutch plate really worn out, or again......the clutch set is not original parts at all......sooo everytime ur car sooo power untill rev end, clutch also will slip too.....

4. If getting the semi racing for 3 puck type like exedy, trd.....etc also can but i gurantee no longer ur flywheel need to be skin. Very tiao and damn grib .......

5. Last, just get original clutch set is better than everything.....even my car also original clutch set too..haha......

Hmm, case 2 might be my problem because the slipping is an on and off problem.

Is 3 puck same as triple-plate? I'm not so versed on clutches. Any why my flywheel needs to be skin? Skimmed issit?

if exedy one set racing clutch organic type( bulat) with clutch cover around rm600-700...

Is 3 puck same as triple-plate?

3 puck mean tiga kaki and triple plate mean tiga lapis...

3 puck racing clutch very hard to be driven on road ler.. especially traffic jam..

i wanna change my clutch also liau, worn out alot already now no more space for it to adjust, pedal getting higher and higher and getting stiffer...

tumpang thread wan ask:
dot3 and dot4 fluid should be the same right? just dot4 higher boiling point? why izit last time i switch from dot3 to dot4 and my clutch felt lighter abit? Yeah imoloq last time you try my clutch it is already lighter than when i just transplant my engine, you have to ask trd_ae92 how it felt like at first XD.. so scarry..

Dot3 and Dot4 really need to be use carefully....as my mechanic told me dot4 can stand for higher pressure .....so the hose line should be slightly bigger. Haven't really go inspect my ae92 with the honda CRV comparing it.

Rollakid, my car now done and everything check, wiring ae101 fully in already and no more died engine while driving......now learn a lot by myself. More familiar with 20v svt working and trouble.

Bro Imoloq, the 3 puck is same as 3 pieces clutch plate (call triple plate seperate), cos the material is much different as our ceramic clutch, the 3 puck if longer use with the flywheel, since is very grib of course u have to pay some " Sacrify " on the flywheel. the 3 puck is made of metallic material that will look shinny shinny on the plate, that will slowly frazzle ur flywheel, overall depend on ur driving method lor........:_: :_: :_: :emoticon_U:

wah.. another person sifu level already XD next time help me check my car ler.. you got buy timing gun already or not?

hijack a bit...

just curios...
triple plate, lighter right...

but why it's hard on pedal...??? is it because of the lost of weight make it hard to press ?
what if we put another clutch pump ??? will it make any diff ? heee...

haha..not sifoo grade lar...just learn some some for my own use lor. timing gun have to be delay lor since need to save some $$$$, u know my second kids out liao mar....

Bro chinozie, the 3 puck clutch set doesn't mean lighter, just the performance they got is much better than Original clutch set, let's say for high rev, yet it can stand for high temperature and won't lost the grib, but for ceramic type, when high rev may slip but grib....what am i talking here???..... jk...:emoticon_U:  .....also price is much more different too.....i use the 3 puck for my gze engine last time....damn grib lar....but u can't get use of it when pressing the clutch pedal...due to it's clutch spring rate is more stronger, but forturnately i got my gze clutch pedal from H/C which got the spring helper make the pressing not soo hard. if adding another pump or hydrolic also won't help much.

what spring helper? izit the same thing like in ah tiam's 86 ar? you remember him saying something about he do something to his clutch pedal that it become kinda soft for him to step on even when it is hard?

trd_ae92 - spring rate is more stronger ...hmmm ok...

back to the topic...

can the slipping be countered by changing clutch cover with stronger diaphragm spring ?
so the pressure on the clutch plate much more stronger then it won't slip any more...
