I also mentioned that an old car or a car equipped with an R12 system cannot use the newer gasses and needs to be converted. Also R132 is known to be not as efficient as the old R12 gas and requires more 'energy' to give the same results. It is however much more friendlier to the environment.Let me take a guess here and say that some of our local air-cond shops have made the switch to the modern gasses as the older R12 is becoming harder to come by since the ban in the mid-90s. Now when you service your air-cond, chances are you'll lose all the gas in the system and it will need to be refilled. Now if an old car equipped with an R12 system is refilled with R132, there will be leaks and the air-cond will not be as cold as before.However an old car which has never had its air-cond service will still have some R12 gas in its system when it is refilled. So the mixture of R12 and R132 could be why a car which hasn't been serviced performs better than a car which has been service. Take into account the points mentioned above. Its not the service that kills the air-cond, its the new less efficient gas. And the new gas works better with modern cars because of better air-conditioning systems than the ones found on old cars. Either way it looks like a lose lose situation for the older models...unless you retrofit a modern air-cond in...</blockquote>
